I currently work part time on research projects in the Electronic Publishing Research Group at the University of Nottingham.
My last project, funded by Adobe Systems Inc, involved research into Web graphics (SVG), and also on document structure (in PDF, and RDF). Previous projects that I worked on were the CAJUN and Open Journal Framework projects.
In 1986 I gained an upper second B.Sc. (Hons) in Mathematics with Computing from the University of Nottingham, and stayed on in the Department of Computer Science to study for a Ph.D. I gained my Ph.D., titled `An investigation of parallelism in document formatting', in January 1991.
From October 1990 I worked on the development of a platform-independent text formatter for Software-AG as a research assistant at the University of Nottingham. This finished at the end of 1992, when I started work on the first of the two CAJUN projects.
In 1990 I set up a partnership called Merlin Open Systems with Peter Sutton. This has now grown into a successful business, particularly in the area of Acrobat plug-in development, PDF file manipulation, macro writing and general software development.

My spare time is mostly taken up by rowing which I took up in early 1992, when I joined the Nottingham Boat Club. I row and scull competitively and train five or six days each week. The hard work is offset by several very good weekends away at regattas around the country in the summer, usually with plenty of competition followed by celebrations or commiserations ...
In July 1994 I bought my own Aylings Hi-Tec single scull, named Artful Dodger, and lightweight chopper blades.
I won my novice sculling pot at Stourport in August 1993, my novice rowing pot at my home regatta, Nottingham Sprint, in July 1994, and my novice coxing pot at Ironbridge in June 1995. You can see my wins to date, with a picture too!
| I enjoy running regularly as part of my training and have used this with my enthusiasm for swimming and cycling to have a go at triathlons. I also like watersports and hope to find some good surfing spots later this year, and continue snowboarding, mostly at Tamworth SnowDome. |

I have been singing with the Nottingham Harmonic Society since 1989. It is one of the best large choirs in the country (with around 200 members), and has interesting programmes, including an annual performance of Handel's Messiah, and very popular Christmas Carol Concerts. Concerts are usually held in the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, and one in Southwell Minster in the summer.
Prior to singing with the Harmonic Society I was a member of the choirs at my schools, including Oakmeeds (Burgess Hill), Maidstone Grammar School, and the University Choir at Nottingham. I studied Music to `O' level standard and am still a keen pianist, having reached Grade VII standard in 1983. Now that I am practising fairly regularly I hope to complete Grade VIII.
Je suis étudiant de français. Je commençais un cours de français avec le `Open University' en 1999.
I have an interest in the French language, and passed the first level of an
Open University French course in 1999.
